MISSISSIPPI RIVER CAUCUS IN MEMPHIS BIG SUCCESS
The Clean Water Network organized its first regional caucus in Memphis, Tennessee , February 7-8. The Caucus focused on developing strategies for fighting nitrogen and phosphorous pollution in the Mississippi River Basin. The Mississippi River is a critically important natural resource, yet it is plagued with a host of environmental problems: from farmland runoff to wetlands devastation to sewage overflows. The caucus was designed for environmentalists and activists, who are working in the trenches to clean up and protect the Mississippi River Basin.
Sessions at the caucus included a primer on the Clean Water Act and a federal update on pending national legislation important to the Mississippi River Basin, including the Farm Bill and the Clean Water Restoration Act. The caucus also included interactive sessions on nonpoint source pollution, wetlands protection and hypoxia and the dead zone.
The next regional caucus is set for July 12-13th in Dubuque, Iowa. This caucus will focus on global warming and its impact on the Mississippi. The caucus will explore a myriad of issues attributed to the climate crisis and will talk about impacts as well as explore solutions. If you are interested in participating in this caucus please email NatalieRoy@cleanwaternetwork.org.
Our thanks to the following CWN members and friends who helped make the Memphis caucus a success: Albert Ettinger, Barry Sulkin, Cyn Sarthou, Renee Hoyos, Diana Threadgill, Jason Flickner, Martha Noble and Jan Goldman Carter.
The Caucus was sponsored by the Clean Water Network, Tennessee Clean Water Network, the University of Memphis Groundwater Institute and the Mississippi River Corridor. The meeting was made possible through a generous grant from the McKnight Foundation and took place at the Fogelman Executive Conference Center at the University of Memphis.
