2nd Annual Hog Vigil

Environmental and community organizations held the Second Annual Hog Vigil June 17-19. The event was intended to draw attention to the harmful effects large scale factory farming has on local environments. (Jun 23, 2008)

Mississippi River Basin Study Released

On October 16th, the National Academy of Sciences’ National Research Council, an independent organization chartered by Congress to advise the government on scientific issues, released a study on the water quality concerns of the Mississippi River Basin. The NRC study, which called on EPA to use its authority under the Clean Water Act to provide greater protection of the Mississippi River, was sponsored by the McKnight Foundation. (Nov 5, 2007)

Senate Committee Passes Dangerous Abandoned Mines Bill

The Senate Environment and Public Works Committee today (September 13th) approved Senate bill 1848, the "Cleanup of Inactive and Abandoned Mines Act" introduced last year by Colorado Senators Wayne Allard (R) and Ken Salazar (D). The bill would waive Clean Water Act Protections for Activities at Abandoned Mines. (Jul 19, 2007)

CWN Sends Letter to Senate Opposing Clean Water Act Exemptions

On Monday September 25, the Clean Water Network sent a group letter to all members of the Senate expressing concerns about S. 1848, the “Cleanup of Inactive and Abandoned Mines Act,” which waives the Clean Water Act and other environmental laws. Forty-five member organizations from 29 states signed on to the letter. (Jul 19, 2007)

Good Samaritan Legislation Proposes to Clean Up Mines with Clean Water Act Waivers

The legislative solutions recently proposed to solve the problem of cleaning up abandoned mones offered on behalf of the Bush Administration in the House and Senate (H.R. 5404 and S. 2780) and by Colorado Senators Salazar and Allard (S. 1848) create no new regulations and no new funding, but instead offer dangerous waivers from the Clean Water Act, Superfund, and – in the case of S. 1848 – exemptions from six other major environmental laws, state laws and local ordnances. EPA Finalizes Rule Exempting Oil and Gas Operations from needing Clean Water Act Permits: Rule Goes Well Beyond Congressional Mandate

EPA has finalized a rule that completely exempts stormwater runoff for oil and gas activities from needing discharge permits under the Clean Water Act, even when that runoff is contaminated with pollutants. (Jun 30, 2006)

Congress Considers Bill that would Allow More Stormwater Pollution into our Waters

On June 8th, Representative John Duncan (R-TN) introduced a bill in the House of Representatives that would ease stormwater control requirements for developers and tie the hands of federal and state enforcement agencies from preventing stormwater pollution caused by development. The so called "Stormwater Enforcement and Permitting Act of 2006" (HR 5558) would undermine the progress the country has made since Congress amended the Clean Water Act to require National Pollution Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) permits for stormwater discharges.
