About the Clean Water Network

The Clean Water Network (CWN) is a national coalition of more than 1,200 local, state and national non-profit public interest organizations working together to protect the health, safety and quality of our nation's waters. It is the largest advocacy coalition in the country working to protect our nation's water resources.

The mission of the Clean Water Network is to work together to protect and restore clean water and wetlands throughout the nation. Through our work we envision a world where our rivers, lakes, estuaries and other waters will be safe for our children to swim in, for aquatic life to live in, and for us all to drink from. Through our collective efforts, our citizenry will be reconnected with the importance of clean water in their lives.

The Clean Water Network's goal is to safeguard water quality for future generations by working to defend, strengthen and implement the Clean Water Act. The organization's purpose is to:

  • Safeguard water quality for future generations by working to defend, strengthen and implement the Clean Water Act and other key federal and state legislation impacting water; and
  • Empower public interest organizations across the country on clean water issues so that individually and collectively stronger voices on clean water policy-making are heard.

The Network is also very active on water quantity/supply issues, working actively to address the serious impacts on our nation's water resoures from global warming.

In order to achieve its mission and accomplish its goals the CWN:

  • Distributes the latest news and information on federal clean water policy developments to its network of supporters; and
  • Fosters communication and collaboration among member groups and coordinates issue-based clean water campaigns.

CWN's membership is comprised of a diverse set of groups including farmers, hunters and anglers, garden clubs, surfers, boaters, environmentalists, faith communities, labor organizations, smart growth planners, consumer advocates and civic associations. Our members depend on CWN for information and analysis of new threats to the Clean Water Act and strategic opportunities to advance its implementation. The Network is a direct link for community leaders around the country serving as a forum for building bridges among its members when there are divergent views on proposed water policy. We coordinate strategic efforts that leverage the strengths of our local, state and national members to deliver a strong, consistent message to the public, media and decision makers.

Since 1992, the Clean Water Network has assisted public interest groups by serving as a portal for the latest news and information on federal clean water policy developments. The Network facilitates communication among member groups and coordinates joint policy statements and position statements as well as activities. This combination of federal policy work and field advocacy is needed to achieve a stronger national program that will help to bring polluted waterways back to health and preserve our nation's rivers, lakes, streams, wetlands, estuaries and coastal waters.
