Obama Signs Executive Order Officially Forming Gulf Coast Ecosystem Restoration Task Force
Yesterday President Obama signed an Executive Order creating an intergovernmental task force to oversee ecosystem restoration in the Gulf of Mexico, a region devastated by the recent BP oil spill disaster and decades of petroleum exploration. The mission of the Gulf Coast Ecosystem Restoration Task Force is to coordinate efforts to implement restoration programs and projects in the gulf coast region.
List of Congressional Hearings on the Disaster in the Gulf of Mexico
The last several weeks have been busy on Capitol Hill. A number of different committeess from both sides of Congress have held hearings to discuss the Deep Horizon oil rig spill in the Gulf of Mexico that is currenlty pumping out over 200,000 gallons of crude oil in the Gulf every day. The hearings have focused on testimony from both industry executives and government officials.
Petition to Establish Numeric Standards and TMDLs for Nitrogen and Phosphorous
Petition submitted to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency calling on them to establish numeric water quality standards for nitrogen and phosphorous in the Mississippi River Basin. The standards should protect not only the river itself but extend to the portion of the ocean protected by the Clean Water Act but outside the jurisdiction of any state and to all water bodies in all states for which numeric water quality standards controlling nitrogen and phosphorus pollution have not yet been established.
Using Water Wisely: Southwest Data Shows the Promise of Efficiency- August 2008
The report shows that by using existing water-efficient technologies and practices in agriculture, homes, electricity production and business the six Southwestern states alone could save up to 1.86 trillion gallons of water per year. This is equivalent to the amount of water New Mexico and Nevada consume each year.
Region 6- Mid South
Region Six, the Mid-South, is located in the southern United States bordered by Mississippi to the east, Arizona to the west and Kansas, Colorado and Missouri to the north. The region consists of the following states: Arkansas, Louisiana, Oklahoma, New Mexico and Texas as well as 66 tribes.
