CWN Regional Caucus on Oil, Mining and Gas Water Pollution a Huge Success

CWN's recent regional caucus on Oil, Mining and Gas Water Pollution in the Lower Mississippi River Basin was a huge success. The event, held in Little Rock, AR, was attended by more than 45 clean water activists from around the country including Hank Graddy, Sierra Club Mississippi River Basin Issue Team & Renee Hoyos, TN Clean Water Network pictured above. The caucus focused on a variety of issues related to the threats posed to our waters by oil, mining and gas extraction. Two important topics discussed during the two day caucus were hydraulic fracturing for natural gas and the Gulf of Mexico oil spill disaster. The caucus included panel presentations, question and answer sessions, brainstorming workshops and networking opportunities.  Presentations and other materials from the caucus are posted HERE.

CWN Holds Successful Capitol Hill Briefing on March 15th --The Mississippi River: The River Left Behind

The Clean Water Network's Capitol Hill briefing explored pollution problems and solutions in the  Mississippi River Basin.  The March 15 briefing took place in Room 122 of the Cannon House Office Building. The briefing focused on why the Mississippi River Basin lags behind in funding and resources compared to other Great Waters in the United States (Chesapeake Bay, Great Lakes, Everglades, etc.). One  purpose of the briefing was to identify lessons learned from other regions and spotlight what is happening on the ground in the region.

Clean Water Network Groups Call on EPA to Take Away Alabama's Authority Over Water Permitting Program

Cahaba River

Fourteen Alabama environmental groups led by the Alabama Rivers Alliance have officially filed a petition with Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to withdraw Alabama's authority over the water pollution permitting program because it does not meet the minimum requirements of the Clean Water Act. The petition was preceded by a report detailing the inadequacies and underperformance of the Alabama Department of Environmental Management (ADEM) in managing and enforcing the NPDES program in Alabama that was funded through the Clean Water Network's State Assistance Fund.

American Forests - DC

We are people who care about – and for – forests.

American Forests, the oldest national nonprofit conservation organization in the country, advocates for the protection and expansion of America’s forests. Since 1990, we have planted nearly 40 million trees. Our goal is to work with our partners to plant an additional 25-30 million trees in forest restoration projects during the next five years. We restore watersheds to help provide clean drinking water. We replant forests destroyed by human action and by natural disasters.

Choose Clean Water

Modeled on similar successful efforts in the Great Lakes and Everglades, the Choose Clean Water Coalition was initiated in late 2008. Through a series of exploratory meetings, Chesapeake region non-profit organizations and Chesapeake Bay funders determined that there would be significant value in a more collaborative and coordinated campaign to advance the common issues most critical to achieving measurable progress on Bay and sub-watershed restoration.
