CWN joined forces with the Sierra Club, the National Sustainable Agriculture Coalition and the Gulf Restoration Network to organize a landmark regional summit on Mississippi River Basin environmental issues in New Orleans. The Summit focused on developing strategies to address the enormous environmental challenges we face from the expanding Dead Zone in the Gulf. The event attracted more than 100 attendees! Through a generous grant from the McKnight Foundation, CWN provided travel funding for members to attend. The event was held at the New Orleans Marriott located on 555 Canal Street.

The Summit started with a trip to the Lower 9th Ward in New Orleans, visiting a destroyed bayou/wetlands area and the river bank. Tour goers also viewed the numerous new construction taking place throughout this area that was devastated by Hurricane Katrina.
