BP Gulf Oil Spill News

More than five weeks after a massive fire on the Deepwater Horizon oil rig caused the rig to sink to the ocean floor the the resulting oil spill continues more or less unabated. Initial estimates put the amount of oil spewing out of the damaged oil well at somewhere around 210,000 gallons per day. However revised estimates have placed that number much higher, somewhere between 500,000 and over a million gallons per day. The oil has already washed up on large areas of the Louisiana coastline and barrier islands, threatening wildlife and Gulf resident's livelihoods. BP has tried a number of tactics to solve the problem but none of them have been successful, including a  combination "top kill" and "junk shot" method targeted at halting the flow of oil from the well. The "top kill" method which failed was initiated last week and entailed pumping large amounts of "drilling mud" into the well with enough pressure to stop the upward flow of oil. In addition to pumping in the mud, BP also using a "junk shot" in an attempt to clog the well by inserting debris such as golf balls and used tires.
