Relief Wells Restarted, Cap Continues to Hold

Progress on the two relief wells being drilled in the Gulf of Mexico has restarted today in the wake of Tropical Storm Bonnie that shut down activity on the wells last week. The relief wells, long viewed as the ultimate permanent solution to stopping the gusher in the Gulf, are still on progress to be completed by early August. The wells will take several days of preparation before they are fully restarted. Workers need to reconnect with existing equipment under the water and take a number of other necessary steps to resume the drilling operation.

BP Allowed to Keep Well Closed for Next 24 Hours

The federal government has announced it will allow BP to keep the blown out Macondo well closed and continue the integrity test on it for the next 24 hours despite the detection of "undetermined anomalies" near the well. Government officials are worried about seepage being detected near the well and the possible observation of methane gas over the well. If there is seepage, this means that oil or gas is seeping into the rocks surrounding the well and bubbling up to the surface. Seepage indicates that the wellbore is damaged somewhere under the surface so continuing the pressure test could possibly damage the well even more. The Clean Water Network is excited to announce its next regional caucus, "Oil, Mining and Gas (OMG) Water Pollution in the Lower Mississippi River Basin."  The caucus, scheduled for September 15-16, 2010, will take place in Little Rock, Arkansas.  This interactive event will explore water pollution issues relating to a wide range of mining and drilling practices including hydraulic fracturing. The caucus will also feature a timely session on the Gulf spill disaster, to update participants on specific issues related to clean up and recovery.

On Wednesday, June 30th the Senate Committee on the Environment and Public Works (EPW) will mark up two pieces of oil spill legislation, both introduced in the wake of the Deepwater Horizon disaster. The committee will consider S. 3305, The Big Oil Bailout Prevention Liability Act, which was introduced by Senator Robert Menendez (NJ) on May 4th.  S. 3305 would lift the oil spill liability cap for economic damages incurred by people put out of work from $75 million to $10 billion.
