The last several weeks have been busy on Capitol Hill. A number of different committeess from both sides of Congress have held hearings to discuss the Deep Horizon oil rig spill in the Gulf of Mexico that is currenlty pumping out over 200,000 gallons of crude oil in the Gulf every day. The hearings have focused on testimony from both industry executives and government officials.

Late last month the US Environmental Protection Agency announced a policy that instructs states to adopt smart-growth principles in allocating the $3.3 billion in water infrastructure funding that the federal government doles out each year. Under the policy, states should make projects that upgrade the drinking water and wastewater infrastructure in cities a priority over projects intended to serve new developments on the suburban fringe.

Legislative Update

Transportation and Infrastructure (T&I) Committee Chairman James Oberstar (MN-8th) held a press conference April 21st on Capitol Hill to introduce H.R. 5088, America's Commitment to Clean Water Act (ACCWA). The purpose of this landmark legislation is to reaffirm the ability of the Clean Water Act (CWA) to protect all of the nation's waters.

On April 20 BP's Deepwater Horizon deep sea oil rig exploded, burned for some time and eventually sank. The rig left it its wake a ruptured well pipe that is spewing out 210,000 gallons (5,000 barrels) of sweet crude oil per day into the Gulf of Mexico. BP officials are on the record saying that it could take as long as 90 days to stop the leak, meaning that almost 18.9 million gallons could ultimately get into the water.

On Wednesday April 28th and Thursday April 29th Shavone Hasse, a Clean Water Network member from ICARE (Idaho Concerned Area Residents for the Environment), visited Washington, DC to lobby members of the Idaho congressional delegation on issues surrounding CAFOs (confined animal feeding operations) and the America's Commitment to Clean Water Act. She visited with Network staff members on Wednesday. On Thursday, she was joined by CWN's policy analyst Gordon Culver in lobbying congress.
