On April 28th, 2010 the Clean Water Network submitted comments to EPA on establishing numeric nutrient standards for Florida's waters. CWN urges EPA to adopt strong nutrient standards in Florida based on sound science and resist efforts to weaken numeric limits or delay their effective implementation.

When precipitation events hit urban areas the resulting runoff into local sewer systems and waterways is far from clean. Instead, the rainwater carries with it trash and chemical pollutants from building roofs, parking lots, streets and other impervious surfaces. Without proper natural filters in place, the polluted runoff enters city sewer systems and local water ways unfiltered.

Legislative Update

On April 15th, 2010 the House of Representatives approved the Clean Estuaries Act of 2010 (HR 4715), as amended, which reauthorizes the Environmental Protection Agency's National Estuary Program (NEP) through Fiscal Year 2016 and makes improvements to the program. The bill improves the program's transparency and accountability, promotes coordination among Federal and non-Federal entities, and increases the authorization level for NEP from $35 million to $50 million per year, which will provide funding necessary to include additional estuaries in the program.

The Water Quality Standards workgroup recently helped the Mississippi River Collaborative author and submit comments on US EPA's Draft 2009 Update Aquatic Life Ambient Water Quality Criteria for Ammonia-Freshwater. The comments include the scientific views of the Clean Water Network and the Mississippi River Collaborative. The commenting organizations and their organizational members have many members who are affected by ammonia pollution of the nation's waters.

The last few weeks have been an incredibly busy time here at the Network. We have been taking action on many fronts, including adding our name to a number of sign on letters. The first letter we signed-on to was in support of HR 4202, the Green Infrastructure for Clean Water Act. The Network, along with 73 other groups, sent this letter to members of congress to express our support for this important piece of legislation.
