International World Water Day

International World Water Day was celebrated in towns and cities across the world on Monday, March, 22. The United Nations sponsored event is intended to focus the world's attention on the importance of freshwater and advocate for the sustainable management of freshwater resources. An international day of celebration was first recommended in 1992 and March 22, 1993 was officially designated the first World Water day. This years World Water Day theme was "Shared Water- Shared Opportunities". For more information on the UN's activities on World Water Day, click here.

To mark World Water Day, CWN Executive Director Natalie Roy with CWN Board members Ed Hopkins (Sierra Club), Jan Goldman Carter (NWF) and CWN member Mitch Jones (Food & Water Watch) appeared on a panel at American University Law school to mark World Water Day. The symposium was simultaneously webcast and was sponsored by AU's Sustainable Development Law and Policy.

Additionally, National Geographic's April issue is a special issue that focuses entirely on water. The issue can be accessed online here. The National Geographic website also has an entire section dedicated to freshwater. It has entertaining games and quizzes as well as a number of factsheets and pictures.
