River Rally a Huge Success

National River Rally 2010 hosted by River Network was held May 21-24 in beautiful Snowbird, UT. The event was a huge success, bringing together hundreds of activists from around the country to focus on protecting the nation's rivers. The event was attended by Clean Water Network's Executive Director Natalie Roy as well as a number of Board Members including President Renee Hoyos (Tennessee Clean Water Network), Vice President #1  Martha Noble (National Sustainable Agriculture Coalition), Vice President#2 Rachel Conn (Amigos Bravos) and Secretary Keith Dimoff (Ohio Environmental Council). Other board members in attendance were Katherine Baer (American Rivers) and Cynthia Sarthou (Gulf Restoration Network). The three day event featured numerous expert lead panel discussions, intensive small group learning sessions, field trips and networking opportunities with other activists and funders. Our favorite event was the field trip to the Bingham Canyon Mine just southwest of Salt Lake City. The mine has been in operation since 1906 and accoring to its operator, Kennecott Utah Copper Corporation, it is the world's largest man-made excavation. The mine was designated as a National Historic Landmark in 1966 under the name Bingham Canyon Open Pit Copper Mine.
