The 2012 Power of Water Campaign
Clean Water Network's major 2012 campaign on the Power of Water campaign has officially launched! The POWC is commemorating the 40th anniversary of the Clean Water Act, one of our nation’s landmark environmental laws, as well as the 20th anniversary of the Clean Water Network. Both anniversaries could not be more timely and provide the clean water community a unique opportunity to elevate clean water to the top of our nation's priority list. As we are all aware, today's headlines are not focused on the environment, but rather on the dismal U.S. and global economic situation. The Power of Water campaign is an opportune time to remind decision makers on the local, state and national levels that clean water is essential not just for public health and the environment, but for a strong economy. Polluted waterways do not build civic pride, attract the best employees or encourage investment. Americans know that jobs and environmental protection go hand in hand. You cannot have a robust and sustainable economy without clean water to drink and clean air to breathe.
Coal Sealants Reduction Act of 2011
Clean Water Network strongly supports The Coal Tar Sealants Reduction Act of 2011, a proposed bill to ban the use of coal tar sealant. This bill would protect public health and the environment by banning the use of this unnecessary poison. We applaud Congressman Lloyd Doggett for championing this important legislation. Coal tar sealant is a highly toxic product frequently applied on parking lots, driveways, airport runways and even playgrounds to “beautify” asphalt. Within a few months after application, friction from car tires abrades the coal tar sealant into small particles, which are then washed into our rivers, bays, and estuaries during storm events.
Coal tar sealant contains high amounts of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), many of which are suspected human carcinogens and toxic to aquatic life. Studies conducted by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) have found that storm water runoff from parking lots coated in coal tar sealant, contained 65 times higher concentrations of PAHs than runoff from parking lots that did not use coal tar sealant.

Board Notes February 2011
Here are a couple of updates on some of the things we discussed on the short Board call today.
First: Piper and I made the following arrangements. I contacted OMB and we now have a meeting scheduled between CWN members and OMB to discuss the WOTUS guidance on March 2 at 2:30 pm. I have to say that was the fastest meeting I have ever scheduled with the federal government! Piper thanks for your contact information! She was great.

Short Thoughts on Water on the Occassion of the 38th Birthday of the Clean Water Act
Dear Global Systems and Water Thinkers,
I just wrote a short piece for my boss to use on the occasion of the 38th Anniversary of the Clean Water Act, October 18, 1972 (passed over Richard Nixon's veto with GOP support in the House and Senate). I thought it may be a useful if shorter piece than Maud Barlow's trenchant work that David sent around earlier. Hope it helps.

CWN Board Approves Statement on Regulation of Coal Ash Disposal
On September 8th, 2010 the Clean Water Network board approved an official Network statement on regulating the disposal of coal combustion waste (CWW), also known as coal ash. The statement details a number of public health and environmental threats that the unregulated disposal of coal ash currently poses. It also makes a number of recommendations on what needs to be done to properly and safely regulate the disposal of this waste. Among the most important recommendations made in the paper is that coal ash should be regulated under all the requirements of Subtitle C of the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act. Read the full statement>>> Coal Ash Statement.
